What is sleep dentistry?
Sleep dentistry involves providing dental treatment while the patient is fully asleep under general anaesthetic (GA). It’s ideal for patients with anxiety, complex needs, or those requiring extensive treatment in one visit.
Who is sleep dentistry suitable for?
It’s recommended for:
Patients with dental anxiety or phobia
Children or adults with special needs
People who require multiple or complex procedures
Individuals with a strong gag reflex
Those who want treatment completed in one session
Can I use my private health insurance?
Yes. Most extras covers contribute toward dental costs. Anaesthetist fees are eligible for Medicare rebates and the facility fee will completely be out of pocket.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed. You can book directly with Totem Dental for an initial consultation.
What treatments can be done under general anaesthetic?
Nearly all general dental treatments can be performed, including:
Fillings
Extractions (including wisdom teeth)
Deep cleans and periodontal treatment
Root canals
Comprehensive care for children
Will I feel any pain during the procedure?
No. You’ll be completely unconscious and won’t feel anything during the procedure. You also won’t have any memory of it afterward.
Where is the treatment performed?
Consultations are at Totally Smiles Pakenham and Botanic Ridge Dental Procedures under general anaesthesia are performed at 3AI Care, an accredited facility by a specialist anaesthetist alongside your Totem Dental team.
How much does sleep dentistry cost?
Costs vary depending on the treatment, facility, and anaesthetist fees. We provide detailed quotes and offer options to keep care affordable. Eligible patients may access Medicare rebates or private health insurance benefits. Please see our costings information page.
Can children have treatment under GA?
Yes. We routinely treat children under general anaesthetic, especially those with extensive decay, special needs, or previous trauma. We aim to make it a calm and positive experience for both child and parent.
